Infographic of the Week: Student Loan Debt, 1990–2001

An astounding graphic, vividly revealing the massive increase in the cost of higher education. It's a maddening and tragic reflection of how the US has shifted from a nation creating opportunity for young people to succeed, to a nation ensuring that those who already have much, get to keep as much of their much as possible.

Infographic of the Week: The Evolution of Riot Gear

As the #OWS police confrontations have graphically show, American police forces now appear to be outfitted in near-military grade armor. This diagram vividly illustrates the evolution our police state has taken, over the years, towards an increasingly gnarly, intimidating and confrontational stance. It's sad. It's also related, you can be sure, to the post-9/11 move towards “anti-terrorism” outlook inside our national borders. When your police force is preparing for (basically non-existant) Al-Qaeda-level threats, but only encounters people camping in public spaces, they still rock the gear and tools that they came to the party with: riot helmets, kevlar body armor, 12-gauge shotguns, “flash-bangs” and gas masks.

How far we've fallen.

Branding is Beautiful

I have a soft spot in my heart for beautifully done logo marks. The way that this branding agency has turned many of the best-known into the art and interior decoration of their agency offices is terrific. I especially dig the Bestiary of Brands concept and display. Fun stuff.

Crazy chart: Look at how much time y'all spend on the Facebook

Media_http25mediatumb_yrapx

This is simply nuts. I mean, I believe it but the fact that facebook is in some ways taking over the Internet is just remarkable. Yes, it can be entertaining at times and it does serve some purpose in keeping people connected. But the intensity of the devotion that people show to it, and the logarithmic growth it appears to be seeing is just breathtaking. I visit it a lot, but no more than, say, Daring Fireball or Daily Kos. To me, it's just not that engrossing.

The amount and intensity of time, energy, and attention that facebook now controls means that in effect, it is a standalone platform, the equivalent of Android, or even OS X in some ways. And as it grows it's foothold and influence, the network effects of its dominance are likely to multiply.

It is hard to imagine how massive it is going to become and when, if ever, it will begin to loose steam. Quite a remarkable course of events taking place before our very eyes.

Infographic of the Week: Job Migration between the Titans of Tech

The gravitational pull of Facebook, as seen in this job migration chart, is impressive. Yahoo, along with it's evaporating relevance, is unsurprisingly getting sucked dry of talent. The biggest surprise? LinkedIn, winning the talent competition with everyone but big blue, and nabbing people from Yahoo and MS like there's no tomorrow. Fascinating info.
